Andrew E. Marvin, 83, Lewiston

     

      Andrew (Andy) E. Marvin, age 83, passed away at Deaconess Medical Center at Spokane Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009. He was born at Asotin, June 14, 1926, to Andrew M. Marvin and Lela Thompson Marvin. He was the oldest of six children.

      In 1937, the family moved up Asotin Creek and the next year moved to Clarkston. He attended Clarkston High School through the 10th grade.

      In 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and married Betty Strong. They had two children, Diana and Dale. They were later divorced.

      While in the service he spent time in New Guinea, Philippines and Guam, being discharged after the war in 1946. He graduated from Clarkston High School in 1946.

      Andy and Dorothy Smolinski Cox were married in 1956. Andy worked at several different jobs until going into the Shell service station business in 1950 until 1972. He later sold cars, and owned and operated Rosey's Lounge until 1981.

      In 1972, they built a cabin at Soldiers Meadow subdivision. It was the fourth cabin to be built there. They enjoyed snowmobiling, four-wheeling, dune buggies, fishing and hunting.

      Andy was active in many organizations, including the Lions Club, Lewis-Clark Broncs, Petroleum Retailers, Elks Lodge, and served as chairman of the Nez Perce County March of Dimes. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, York Rite and Shriners-Calam Temple. He was an avid bowler for 30 years and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

      In 1981, Andy and Dorothy moved to Soldiers Meadows where they owned and operated Marvin's Rest Stop, a recreational bar/restaurant. They enjoyed old and many new friends. The Rest Stop was closed in 1987. During winters, they traveled south in their recreational vehicle, staying near Parker, Ariz., most of the time. They sold Marvin's Rest Stop in October 1994 and moved back to Lewiston in 1995, where Andy enjoyed watching television, especially the Mariners.

      Andy is survived by his wife Dorothy; daughter Diana Sargent; son Dale Marvin; stepdaughter Sharon Halsey; granddaughter, Andrea and Gary Gillespie, with children Nicole and Emma; and stepgrandson, Lance and Cami Halsey, all of Spokane; and step granddaughter Denise and Roy Zimmer, with children Natalie, Kate and Adam, all of Missoula, Mont. He is also survived by two brothers, Leland of Clarkston, and Homer and wife Barbara of Lewiston; sisters, Odetta and Gary Clear of Lewiston, and Loretta and Richard Daniels of Missoula; and many nieces and nephews.

      He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Ralph.

      Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Orchards United Methodist Church, 1213 Burrell Ave., in Lewiston.
